Susan Farron Golf | February Golf News 2022

Hi Golfers

2022 has got off to a roaring hot start and I am back into another busy coaching season.

What a great weekend of Tennis and Golf! Firstly Ash Barty's incredible Australian Open win. Barty is the first Aussie women champion in 44 years and a wonderful young sporting role model at 25 years old. Then Rafael Nadal's epic marathon win in the early hours making him the only male player ever to win 21 grand slam singles titles. Just an incredible athlete at 35. And this morning Lydia Ko's one shot win in Florida. This is her 17th LPGA title. Lydia is still only 24 and is inching closer towards induction intoThe Golf Hall of Fame needing another 6 points. If she is to retire at 30, as she was once quoted, she is definitely on track to achieve golf's biggest accolade

I had two wonderful weeks hosting my inaugural 3 day golf schools at Rydges Formosa, on the outskirts of Auckland. We had a diverse group of wonderful interesting golfers eager to improve their games in some very hot conditions.

Because of the very positive feedback, I have decided to continue holding these schools throughout the year.

With 2022 still posing travel uncertainty for some time yet, this is an opportunity for you to play golf, keep golf fit and healthy staying on site in the spacious villas for a few days with meals all taken care of.

Rydges Formosa is a secure venue with vaccine passes required to enter the premises both on course and indoors.. Check out 2022 dates here. I will take the first 10 participants for each school. You can come as a couple or on your own or with a friend or two. I will do my best to fit you into the right course in terms of ability and age but it is also fine to fit into a group with different levels and ages.

My Tuesday Ladies 4 week group classes at Golf Warehouse Ellerslie will commence on Tuesday 8th Feb at an earlier time of 9.30am-10.30am. I am still getting through pre covid waitlists and will email you when your start date is ready. Waitlists will be in order of when you registered and I hope to put on a second class to help with this. Please note lessons are busy but if you would like to be waitlisted for a particular day please email me.

Come Play 18 holes at Tieke Golf Club - Come and have a round of 18 holes at the newly designed course in Hamilton. Friday 11th February - teeing off from 9.30am. Still room to come and join in for the day. Email me info@susanfarrongolf.com

Enjoy the great weather around the country.

See you soon,
Susan

Hints & Tips

How to play the ball that runs through the green and gets stuck between the fringe and long grass:

  • Practice using either a sand wedge, 8 iron or hybrid. See which club works best for you. I'm using a Sand wedge in the video as the flag is very close and the club is heavy.

GOLF RULE CORNER- For the serious golfer

There are many rules in and around the putting green but here is a rule worth noting.  How long can you wait when the ball overhangs the hole wanting to fall in but doesn't.

Rule 13.3 A Ball overhanging the hole.

If any part of your ball overhangs the lip of the hole, you are allowed a reasonable time to reach the hole and ten more seconds to wait to see whether your ball will fall into the hole.

If your ball falls into the hole in this waiting time, you have holed out with the previous stroke. If your ball does not fall into the hole in this waiting time, your ball is treated as being at rest. If your ball then falls into the hole before it is played, you have holed out with the previous stroke, but get one penalty stroke added to your score for the hole.

CONSISTENCY

Golfer's use this word a lot when describing their golf game wish list. We all want to have a consistent game but are we prepared to work at getting it. Consistency doesn't discriminate. You either want more of it or you don't. You will either be motivated or not. You won't get consistent if you do not have a regular habit and a regular process of repeating a good routine and repeating an appropriate mind set.

This requires quieting your inner voice, keeping silent and maintain a mind free of distractions. So zip it!

Here are my thoughts and some questions to ask yourself:

Do you chat while in the process of getting ready to play your shot?

What Is your language like? Self praising or self defeating

Do you lose focus and concentration after a poor start or a poor end.

Do you hurry and skip your routine sometimes, seldom, or when you can't be bothered?

Do you think too much over the ball?

Are you constantly distracted by work kids, or family when trying to play golf?

Do you find yourself worrying about who is behind you looking back rather than moving to your ball and getting ready?

If you can relate to some of the questions, start by focusing on quieting your mind. Play free of mental distractions and you may find your golf tempo returns..

Keep a similar mental and physical routine for all shots and you will find consistency.
